For the first part of the Summer, we will, as is our custom, be studying the primary Gospel of the Season. This year is the Gospel of Matthew. We will be exploring this Gospel from the perspective of the Five Great Discourses. This week, we will cover Chapter 10, focusing on the commissioning of the Apostles.
Many scholars believe that the five-discourse design on Matthew’s part was deliberate and was modeled on the structure of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Old Testament), or that he may be presenting the Gospel as a new Torah and Jesus as a new and greater Moses. Each of the sections contain a bit of context, the discourse and end with the refrain, “When Jesus had finished saying these things,” or similar words.
We will begin at 5:45 p.m. with Evening Prayer, followed by our session from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Clarkson Center.
